How well do you really know a place?

One passport for everywhere you go. Each destination brings a curated list in four levels. You tap what you've done, it gets a stamp, and the rest waits for next time.

Breadth and depth

Two records of the same trip.

A pin says you landed. A stamp says you found the poncha bar the taxi driver goes to, walked the levada before the tour buses, and came back for the festival. Halflocal is a travel passport that keeps the second kind of record.

Who writes the list

One person who lives there decides what's on it.

Madeira's list is written by Julita Kucińska, who's made Madeira her second home after coming to Portugal in 2017.

  • Destination 001
  • In Portugal since 2017
  • Decides every stamp

Every list you've read sends you to the same twelve places. That's what a list of everyone's favourites is, sorted by how many people agreed with it.

Madeira's list isn't voted on. One person who lives there writes it: born there, or moved there and stayed, and there long enough to tell a real place from a famous one. They decide which level each thing belongs to, and they leave things off. The famous places sit at the early levels. The later ones are what no guide, book or video has. You can suggest. They still decide.

Every list and who writes it
Four levels

Every destination, curated in four levels.

A level says how you get in. How much time, planning, money or luck a thing takes, never how hard it is. Finish one and you take its name. The four below are Madeira's, because Madeira's list is the first one open: 34 stamps to earn, and one for arriving.

Every destination gets these four levels. The stamps inside them change with the place, written by someone who lives there and knows it past the guidebooks.

  1. Tourist
  2. Visitor
  3. Explorer
  4. Regular
  5. Half-local

Until you finish a level you're just a Tourist. Finish Level 1 and you're a Visitor, and every level after that hands you its own name, up to half-local. That's as close as this gets, and the honest end of the ladder. The mechanics in full, or every stamp on Madeira's list.
